How It Works
Why Join The Challenge?
FABRIC, and its non-profit AZ Apparel Foundation, are pivoting efforts during this pandemic to manufacture safe and effective PPE that meets FDA regulations and we need your help!
As a community resource for apparel entrepreneurs and a manufacturer of sewn products, we have received countless desperate and heartbreaking requests to provide millions of PPE items to healthcare facilities nationwide. We quickly pivoted our efforts and obtained FDA certification to make safe and effective PPE that is compliant with FDA standards using AAMI approved materials. We’re currently filling orders for reusable isolation gowns for local healthcare facilities.
However, as grassroots movements to make PPEs in homes and US factories quickly grew and FDA-approved fabrics in adherence to AAMI standards in short supply, we knew we needed to call on our loyal community of designers and sewists to help us mitigate the shortage.
We created a pattern for a semi-disposable isolation gown that could be made from a readily-available, substantially-equivalent fabric that can be purchased from home improvement stores. This fabric is not AAMI/FDA approved, but its the next best thing. It's fluid repellent, breathable and antimicrobial. We are providing the pattern, technical instructions and fabric information to the passionate sewists and makers who want to join our efforts.
To join the 1 Million Gown Challenge simply follow the steps above
Getting the Right Fabric
Once you’ve downloaded the kit, you’ll need to pick up the specific fabric described in your kit. This substantially equivalent fabric that must be used can be found at most home improvement stores and is sold by the roll. One roll can yield approximately 30 gowns. This fabric can’t be laundered, but it can be wiped down with isopropyl alcohol extending the use of the gown. Don't forget to print the care instructions from your kit to include with your gowns upon delivery.
This fabric is not AAMI FDA approved fabric. HOWEVER, it is extremely fluid repellent, breathable, antimicrobial and durable.
It’s the next best fabric to AAMI FDA approved fabric.
